Background:
Named after the famous local 19th Century poet, William Barnes Primary is situated near the centre of Sturminster Newton, a small market town in the Blackmore Vale area of North Dorset. Children are drawn from there and the surrounding villages. The building dates from 1913 and received extensions in the 1950s and 1960s, to create extra classrooms and a separate hall. Facilities in the 'attractive' grounds include a heated outdoor swimming pool, which children use several times a week in summer, a netball court and play areas. The adjoining town recreation ground is used for field sports such as soccer, rugby, hockey, tennis and rounders. Academic expectations are 'high' and children with special needs can be assisted individually. 'First hand' experiences are used to complement the curriculum whenever possible and a 'considerable number' of extra-curricular musical, sporting and craft activities are on offer. The school is keen to maintain its 'positive partnership' with parents, who are encouraged to help in the classroom or with social and fundraising events. The school is over-subscribed.
